The New Haven/León Sister City Project is a progressive, bi-national, grassroots organization that seeks to promote social justice in the communities of Greater New Haven, Connecticut and León, Nicaragua. The Project was founded in 1984, at the front end of a movement of sister-city relationships that sprung up between Nicaraguan cities and North American or European cities throughout the 1980’s.

We continue today to prioritize a healthy relationship between US citizens and Nicaraguans through their interactions with each other, raise awareness in New Haven of the impacts of US policy and lifestyle choices on Nicaragua, and implement grassroots initiatives designed to connect and empower local residents of New Haven and Leόn. Our work supports sustainable development in both cities, and our focus on social justice requires us to address the systemic and structural roots of poverty.
